Before there were movies, the world relied on live theatrical entertainment. Then, in 1657, a Dutchman invented a device that would project images onto a sheet or wall. It was called a Magic Lantern, since it seemed that the images appeared by magic. The Magic Lantern became the earliest form of cinema.

As technology progressed, so did the lanterns, from candles and kerosene to limelight then carbon arc and incandescent bulbs. Movement (slip slides and chromotropes) brought to the slide images increasing the popular entertainment. By the mid 1880's, the Magic Lantern was the dominant visual entertainment, as it enthralled old and young alike.

Photography allowed images to become more life-like and brought far away lands to the masses. Magic Lantern shows were largely popular until the advent moving picture shows. Other Locations: Other locations will incur additional fees for travel and/or lodging.
Non Profits and Historic Venues - We give discounts for nonprofit associations and California State Parks.
Historic Events - If you are holding an event, we can potentially waive the fee for shows if we are also selling tintypes at your event, you are not charging the public specifically to see us, and are also willing to waive any vendor fees.
